How to Build Your Dream Home Gym

As a fitness guy myself, I always notice a great home gym when I see one while touring homes! I’m always evolving my current set up taking a lot of inspiration from homes I’ve seen and making notes of what I like and don’t like. Recently I added a large ‘Rig’ for my CrossFit workouts. It’s a large frame in my driveway with various options for pull-ups, gymnastic rings, rope climbs, barbell movements, bench/squats, etc. Building a home gym is personal to your home and you, but these are some tips that I think are helpful when planning out your home gym!

  1. Determine Your Fitness Goals:

Before embarking on your home gym journey, it’s essential to identify your fitness goals. Do you want to build strength, lose weight, improve cardiovascular health, or simply maintain overall fitness? Understanding your objectives will help you make informed decisions when selecting equipment and designing your space.

  1. Assess Your Available Space:

Evaluate the available space in your home to determine the size and layout of your gym. Whether it’s a spare room, basement, garage, or even in your driveway, make sure you have enough room to accommodate the equipment and allow for movement during workouts. Take measurements and consider factors such as ceiling height, ventilation, and flooring options. For me I knew I wanted some equipment that is standard for CrossFit workouts so sprung for the large ‘rig’ of course no room in the house, so we installed them outside! Eventually a pole barn or covered area for more than just seasonal workouts would be ideal.

  1. Budgeting:

Setting a budget for your home gym is crucial. Determine how much you’re willing to invest in equipment, machines, storage, flooring, etc. Remember, building a home gym doesn’t have to be expensive. With smart planning, you can create an effective workout space without breaking the bank. Try spots like the Facebook marketplace or even check out Walmart.com. You’ll find a selection of affordable weights and accessories!

  1. Essential Equipment:

Identify the equipment that aligns with your fitness goals and fits within your budget. Some staple items to consider include:

  • Cardiovascular Equipment:  Stationary bike, treadmill, rowing machine, or jump rope.
  • Strength Training Equipment: Dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, weight plates, resistance bands, and a squat rack/bench.
  • Multi-Functional Equipment: Adjustable power rack/rig, cable machine, suspension trainer, kettlebells, and medicine balls.
  • Additional Accessories: Yoga mat, foam roller, speaker system; I would actually consider essential! Oh and storage racks to keep an organized clean environment.
  1. Flooring and Mirrors:

Investing in suitable flooring is essential to protect your home and reduce the risk of injury. Choose flooring options that provide shock absorption, are easy to clean, and can withstand the weight and impact of your equipment. Rubber or foam tiles, interlocking mats, or commercial-grade gym flooring are popular choices. Additionally, consider installing mirrors to check your form during exercises and create an illusion of a larger space.

  1. Lighting and Ventilation:

Proper lighting and ventilation play a significant role in creating an inviting workout environment. Natural lighting can boost mood and energy levels, while artificial lighting should be bright enough to eliminate shadows and ensure safety. Adequate ventilation helps maintain air quality and keeps the space comfortable during intense workouts. Consider windows, fans, or HVAC systems to promote airflow.

  1. Motivational Elements:

A home gym is only useful is you actually use it! Create a space that is personalized to you and that you will enjoy being in! Add motivational quotes, artwork, or photos of fitness role models to keep you motivated during workouts. Consider incorporating a sound system to play your favorite workout playlist or install a television for entertainment during cardio sessions. Make the color scheme something that you can find energy from too!

Building a home gym provides you with the convenience, flexibility, and privacy to reach your fitness goals on your terms and can be desirable addition to a home! Many people find it easier stick to a fitness goal if they have all the equipment they need at home. It can also help motivate the whole family and get your kids involved in an active lifestyle! I’m excited to keep adding to my home gym, and hope some of these tips were helpful to you!
